The BBL opener, Newcastle closed the curtains in the BBL Trophy and now they open them in the BBL Cup.
1ST HALF
To begin with it was all Newcastle, scoring many of their points in transition and the lions just couldn't hit their shots, shooting at 28% on the quarter, luckily their defense kept the capital side in the game. The 1st quarter ended 17-19, Newcastle going in with a 2pt lead. However, Vince and his powerhouse squad weren't going to be turned over that easy, winning the quarter 15 - 9, 6 minutes into the quarter, Newcastle down by 4 but a big dunk from Evan Maxwell turns the tide forcing a quick timeout from coach Vince Macaulay at 34 - 32.
Newcastle come out of the gates quickly forcing a lead, finishing at the half, 36-38 to the Newcastle Eagles.
2ND HALF
Another exciting half of basketball, London Lions still cant get going fully, however the experience of DeAndre Liggins and Justin Robinson is definitely helping the lions stay in this game, London are starting to create some look's, whilst the eagles are doing their thing despite their struggles from behind the arc shooting at 21% (4/19). London Lions get the lead heading into the 4th Quarter 55-54. What a 4th Quarter that was! Both teams going right at it playing with very high intensity, DeAndre Liggins and Kevin ware both coming up clutch for the Lions but Justin Gordon breaks Lions fans hearts and sends the game to overtime with a buzzer three!
OVERTIME
Lions just cant get it done, scoring just 2points in comparison the Eagles 12, Louis Sayers hitting 8pts down the stretch sealing the W for the Eagles. Lions fans will be disappointed given all the hype surrounding the side, yet currently sitting 0-2 against BBL opposition if you include the Sheffield Pre - Season game.
Summary:
Overall, Lions could never get it going and that was clear to see hitting just 34% of shots compared to the Eagles 44%. Although they didn't get it going, they did show sparks of brilliance and signs of what the squad can create, but that doesn't matter if it doesn't win the game.
Justin Gordon led all scorers with 24pts and 17rebs, Dirk Williams on the Lions hitting 19pts in the 1st half.
